Kieran to raise the MCG curtain

FOOTBALL: Local talent Kieran Butcher is gearing up to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on AFL Grand Final day.

Butcher will play for the WA State 16s team on September 27 against Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under 16 Division One Championship title.

The footballer is kicking himself in disbelief that he will be playing a curtain-raiser at the home of football.

“I’m pretty pleased about it all, as soon as we found out I couldn’t believe we got the chance to go there,” Butcher said.

Butcher recently returned from the Gold Coast where he played in the NAB National football carnival against the other states.

He said he was resting up for a week before starting training by himself and with the team.

Vic Metro defeated WA at the Gold Coast, but Butcher said the team will be a force to be reckoned with come September 27.

“It should be a pretty tight game, we should have a pretty good chance,” Butcher said.

Butcher will play a vital role in the grand final, said West Australian Football Commission talent and coaching coordinator Raffaele Guadagino.

“Kieran Butcher had an outstanding willingness to play his role for the team, he went beyond the expectations of the coaching staff,” Guadagino said.

“When we played Vic Metro Kieran played on one of the best players in the 16s Championship, one of the best in the nation, and he shot him down to one of his worst games,” he said.

Guadagino said the WA team battled well to make the grand final with little preparation, just stepping off the flight before playing their first game at the Gold Coast.

“This time we’ll be better prepared and our style of play will get them, I think we have a good chance.”
