TWO local radio stations have been recognised on the national stage, with nominations for the 2008 Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs).
Amongst several hundred entries from right across the nation, RadioWest and HOT FM have earned nominations in six categories.
“To see recognition like this on a national scale is great stuff, a real achievement for our team,” RadioWest and HOT FM program director Mat Cummins said.
“Now we just need to win.”
Now in its 19th year, the 2008 ACRAs will be held on the Gold Coast in October – and will feature attendance by some of the industry’s best.
HOT FM breakfast comedy duo Chippy and Nay are among those honoured with a nomination, theirs in the category of “best station produced comedy segment”.
“We try to do different things,” Nay said.
“Prank calls and phone ins have been done to death – so we wanted to try something a bit more creative.”
The excerpt entered by the pair was titled “So You Think You’re an Underworld Figure” and was a combination of the two hit TV shows “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Underbelly” to produce the hilarious hybrid.
“We chose it because it was different from what the other stations are doing,” Chippy said.
“And when you’re up against stations with hundreds of thousands more listeners you have to be original.”
Although a win would be welcome, Cummins says it’s not important.
“Just to be recognised by people who understand and know radio is enough,” he said.
