Chalk and cheese foreshores

30/07/2008 11:15:00 AM
PLAYGROUNDS, interactive fountains and a maze on the Leschenault Foreshore are what a local group hopes will keep the area free from high-rises and more accessible for the community.

Save Our Shores Bunbury hope their self confessed “extreme” idea will stimulate more debate about what could be done with the vacant land.

The closing date for public submissions about the Bunbury Waterfront concept plan ends next Thursday August 5.

SOS Bunbury is a community action group set up by concerned Bunbury people wanting to protect its beautiful city and its waterways.

Member Jo Clarke said their concept for the foreshore focused on “softer” alternatives than high-rise buildings and concrete walkways.

“We’re going to extremes at the moment to say stop the rezoning and have it for community based development,” she said.

Ms Clark said the group realised the entire foreshore would not be left completely free of development.

“We are not anti development but we want any development to be done sympathetically to preserve and enhance Bunbury,” she said.

“And we don’t want it to stay as it is now, which is wasted space, although valuable wasted space.”

The group hopes that Bunbury council use their plans to negotiate an alternative to what LandCorp had proposed in its structure plan.

The must be joking. Wake up Bunbury - we're in the 21st century. We should be aiming to become a modern, developed city with the sort of ammenities that will attract people here. Not some provincial backwater with a kids playground as our main waterfront feature.

Love it! Get rid of the car parks though. Let's have a proper city park with lots of things to do - minus the cars.

SOS members, you haven't got a clue do you? Landcorp my not have hit the nail on its head but its far and away closer to what Bunbury needs. The SOS plan is laughable and out of touch with what the city needs; a hub that tackles both social and economic needs.

I dont like the fact that its a knee jerk reaction to a government financial surplus. Sure Bunbury needs to move ahead as a city but instead of building over nice grassy areas, they should deal with the old, decrepit and abandoned buildings in the city center.

So if they build a tea rooms instead of developing the foreshore - how are they supposed to pay for the marina? They're going to need to sell a lot of scones and tea...

Wake up Bunbury. We are about to lose something very precious. 25680m of concrete floor space.290 residential dwellings.Dont be conned by Landcorp,we will be losing our foreshore forever. The great cities in the world have great parks but we will have a concrete jungle! What about a botanical garden?Let us plan to beautify the area, but we must keep the area for the use of this and all future generations.Say no to landcorp.

We need to develop this area as at the moment it's a bit of wasted space but there needs to be a compromise between the high rise and public open space. As the Landcorp plan shows there is very little public open space left, as far as SOS,s plan I'm sure given more time and expertise they could come up with an equally flash looking plan

A tea house? Biggest joke I've ever heard. I'm sure a tea house and a maze are going to bring floods of tourists in.

The same negative arguments about limiting development along Leschenault Inlet were put forward in 1988 with the original Bunbury Harbour City plan. The effect? A drab grass and brickpaved foreshore that nobody is attracted to (except for the annual fireworks) and a 4-lane road between the CBD and the water. At last, this plan seeks to re-address these 20-year-old planning failings.

Q: What do you think of the plans to develop the Bunbury waterfront?
