THE redevelopment of the iconic Fawlty Towers accommodation site is set to start in September and is one of the $79 million accommodation projects in the pipeline for Greater Bunbury.
The Fawlty Towers redevelopment is at an estimated cost of $12 million.
Perth owners Pat and Terri Baker and Dan White have owned the site for about two years and are turning it into a short stay accommodation complex which will include 36 self-contained apartments.
At the moment Fawlty Towers has 12 rooms.
Mr White said the location was what made the site unique.
“It is going to fit in nicely with all of the new beach upgrades,” he said.
“Each apartment will have uninterrupted sea views and will be in a family-friendly environment.”
Architecture John Damant said the finished complex would be a village-like atmosphere inspired by traditional Mediterranean architecture.
It will also be climatically responsive, allowing good solar access, cross breezes for cooling and pleasant vistas from the units.
A South West theme using local stone and timber will be evident in the architecture he said.
South West Develop-ment Commission chief executive officer Don Punch said he was pleased with the redevelopment of the site.
“As Bunbury continues to grow as a tourist destination more accommodation is needed,” he said.
“Increasing capacity and diversifying the type of accommodation available, giving people a greater choice of places in which to stay.”
